Pictures & Letters Co.

Signs, Murals, & Designs of All Kinds

✦

PAL Co. is a one-gal painting and design studio built on a lifelong compulsion to make everything look special. With a foundation in traditional sign-writing techniques, my practice honors time-tested wisdom while leaving room for emergent possibilities and unexpected combinations. I make thoughtful, lasting, one-of-a-kind work with extreme attention to detail and quality. I couldn't find a shortcut if I tried.

About & Artist's Statement

Hi, I'm Kelsey — an Olympic Peninsula-based artist and sign painter in pursuit of beauty, efficiency, and quality craftsmanship. I want my work to feel intentional, impactful, and worthy of passing down.

I believe a beautiful sign is also a more functional one, and the false dichotomy between form and function overlooks resource limitations and enables overconsumption. I mourn the loss of design enabled by word processors and inkjet printers, and love how traditional sign techniques demand total abandonment of the modern mindset. What would otherwise be transactional garbage is treated instead like a work of art.

What really tickles me, though, is that sign painting was never really considered art at all. Most sign painters were blue collar laborers performing the practical task of labeling the world using repeatable, efficient strokes — and the result was something beautifully human: recognizable stylistic elements that emerged organically through routine. Drawing and design were once valuable assets across all professions; now they've been funneled into separate "creative" fields as though they were somehow less serious. For this very reason, I never pursued my art — convinced I was more valuable to society in a more "intellectual" career. What's obvious to me now is that I would never have succeeded in that goal, because my creativity and intellectualism are one and the same. Any work I've ever done or will ever do is creative work, and that is in fact a great strength.

While I do love to philosophize and never stop considering the big picture, my passion lives in the details: layout, spacing, paint handling, finish — there is no aspect I don't consider, and reconsider. My process moves between fast, instinctive mark-making and slower, deliberate control, and I'm constantly working to trust my intuition about when to move quickly and when to slow down and get precise.
